Greatest Planet - Zero Impact

What we do

Since its launch in 1969 Greatest Planet has been at the forefront of the struggle to protect our planet from the adverse consequences of global warming. The mission of Greatest Planet is to protect and improve the conditions for life on earth, now and for the future. We have a long term vision of a truly sustainable society, where climate protection and resource conservation go hand-in-hand. As part of this vision, our work falls into 3 distinct categories:

  • First and foremost, we create and implement carbon offset projects that lead to verifiable reductions of greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. The required investment comes from our funders, which include power plants, charitable grants, businesses and, most importantly to us, carbon conscious individuals. As one of the most experienced carbon offset providers, Greatest Planet has $12 (£6m) million invested in a diverse portfolio of 10 offset projects that will educe 3.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. These projects include reforestation, the implemenation of solar, windpower and hydro-electricity, as well as biomass and biodiversity projects. Over the last 10 years alone, we have been actively involved in over 150 reforestation, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and methane collection/landfill projects, in every single continent.
  • In addition, we are proud to support the global climate research community with the tools, facilities, and support required to perform groundbreaking research into global warming. Through our funding, we provide the resources climate researchers need to improve human understanding of atmospheric and Earth system processes, atmospheric chemistry, climate, cloud physics and storms, and interactions between the sun and Earth. In all of these areas, our scientists are looking closely at the role of humans in both creating global warming and responding to severe weather occurrences. • Advancing sound climate change policy is another integral aspect of our work and we are a key contributor to state, regional, national, and international climate change policy discussions. As a result, we not only have strong working relationships with leading climate policy groups and stakeholders involved in the climate change policy debate, but are frequently asked to give evidence on climate change issues to Committees in the US, the UK and elsewhere. In Germany in particular, Greatest Planet was one of the key advisors to Petra Kelly, the then leader of the Green Party, on matters relating to renewable energy and pollution. In France, Greatest Planet had a key involvement with the initial consultation and position papers that led, eventually, to the development of France’s largest wind park in Ally, Haute-Loire. Through Greatest Planet's Disaster Relief Fund, we also collaborate with community groups, municipalities, governments and support relief agencies when disaster strikes; nobody can predict the exact location of the next flood, cyclone, or earthquake. But when they happen, we provide funds to more effectively integrate and utilize community volunteers, to prepare citizens to safely participate in their communities' emergency response, and to help finance the recovery process.
